Car Audio Question: Installing 2 single din units into a double din dash?

Is it possible to stack two single din units on top of eachother in a double din size opening?
I’m hoping to install a regular single din stereo receiver on top of a single din in-dash equalizer.
It seems like it would be possible, but I’m worried it might cause some kind of problem if i stack them directly on top of eachother, Or if it will even fit without some modification.

In california, am I currently legally allowed to mount a GPS unit to my windshield?

Someone told me that two weeks ago, California made it illegal to mount GPS units to the windshield via suction cup or adhesive. I have discovered that those dash board mounts dont adhere so well to the deep contours of my particular dashboard- meaning that a windshield mount is pretty much my only option.
How much would I get ticketed for having a windshield mounted GPS if I were to get pulled over?
thanks… the thing that I cant wrap my head around is that a dashboard mount does nothing to mitigate view obstruction. A square GPS unit being held up by a dashboard mount is still right in front of my windshield, no less than one affixed to the windshield itself.

In California, it is legal to mount a GPS to your windshield only in the corner, not in the middle. The exact rule is that you can mount it within a 5 inch square on the lower corner of the windshield on the driver’s side.

Why is my Garmin Nuvi 260 GPS Memory Full after inserting brand new SD card?

I’ve filled the internal memory on my Garmin Nuvi 260 GPS. The limit is 500 POI. This model is supposed to be able to increase that limit by inserting an empty SD memory card into the empty side slot. I inserted a blank 2GB card. Afterward the save button was no longer grayed out, BUT the Garmin still said “memory full” when I saved a POI. Moreover, the “saved” POI doesn’t show up in my favorites. If I take out the SD card the save to favorites button stays grayed out altogether giving me no option to save?! I don’t have a computer cable not that it’d do me any good…do newer Garmin models have this problem?

try looking at newelectronx gps. you can use up to 16gb on the micro sd card. you would have to spend at least $200 to $400 a Garmin to do that. lol

Are there any GPS receivers that would be good for both auto navigation as well as geocaching?

I’ve never owned a GPS. I tried geocaching, and thought it was fun, so we’re looking at buying a GPS device. What confuses me, though, is that some devices look like they are specialized for hiking/geocaching (like the Garmin eTrex), and others look more specialized for automobile navigation (like the Garmin nuvi). Is that true? Or are there some good ones that can do both comfortably? I don’t want to spend more than $150.

I use an Etrex Vista HCx in my car, along with using it for mapping trails.
When I am in my car, There is a place that I can wedge it in place by my steering wheel and I can read it (it only beeps to warn and at corners instead of announcing the turn). In my girlfriends truck, I set it beside the seat and pick it up occasionally to glance at it.

Any unit with map can be used in the car.
I used my previous etrex that did not do routing on longer trips but had to mark waypoints in it in advance, had to be willing to live with straight lines between the points and it would not change the route if I decided to go off route.
It still worked well as a “self locating map” when I was in a city I didn’t know. It would tell me how far and the direction for the target location but I was on my own to find a route over to it.

Under $150 is cutting it close.

The trade offs you have are:

Maps. Most car users expect routable maps. The cheaper outdoors (many other uses other than geochahing) may not allow routing or may not take as large of a map. In the etrex line, the models with an x after their name use a micro SD card for map storage (up to 2 gig), which is about twice the space needed for the entire road map for the US, Canada, and Mexico.
Outdoors units will also be able to load topo maps that the automotive units can’t.
Outdoors units tend to not be sold with the maps, you have to add that to the price.

Size. Pro and con for both uses.
Outdoor units tend to be small so you can carry them in your hand.
Automotive units tend to be large so you can read them at a distance on the dash.
I would not want to carry an automotive unit while on trails. I can use the smaller screen for the occasional alert on the road.

Battery life.
Automotive units expect to have a car’s 12 volt source available most of the time. Some have batteries but the life of the batteries is short (several hours on the ones I have seen).
Outdoors units expect to be used for long times powered by batteries. Expect 12-18 hours on a pair of good batteries.
I use rechargeable batteries in my etrex and it will run off a USB port charger in a car. When on usb power, the back light stays on instead of shutting off after a user chosen time.
